Up until 1995, Costa Rica had one international airport in San José (SJO). Reaching the beaches in Guanacaste meant standing on the side of the highway in La Ciudad (the city), and climbing on a public bus for a bouncy seven-hour ride. For the more daring travelers, a small puddle jumper flight could bring you directly into the rustic Tamarindo airport which was (and still is) a 500-meter runway situated within a large pasture of grazing livestock.
Liberia International Airport (LIR) - Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport
The Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport, commonly known as the Liberia International Airport (LIR), in the Guanacaste province first began receiving international flights in 1995. There was just one flight per week, but as demand grew, this increased to one flight per day in 1996. A steady upward trend each year of arrivals encouraged the local tourism chamber to set aside funds that increased the tarmac capacity from five to eight airplanes in 2006. By 2007, LIR was receiving 400,000 passengers a year. Further expansion projects throughout 2010 – 2012 of the terminal building increased capacity and efficiency while showcasing a new contemporary look. Another expansion project commenced in January 2017 to once again increase capacity and receive more airlines from around the world.
Liberia International Airport has enabled immediate exploration and steady development of Costa Rica’s northwest region. From the airport salida (exit), you’re just a thirty-minute drive from the spectacular Playa Panama, Playa Hermosa, and Playas del Coco.
