THE LOCATION
Las Catalinas incorporates the principles of New Urbanism where human connection and environmentalism are priorities in the design. This concept is accomplished with public plazas, automobile-free streets, shopping boulevards, restaurants, work/study spaces, and marketplaces. Without cars filling the streets, Las Catalinas’ residents enjoy an old-time sense of community, a rarity today.
Because Las Catalinas was designed at scale for biking and walking, homes and buildings efficiently use space and topography. A walk through town may render thoughts of Antigua in the Caribbean, Casco Viejo in Panama, or Vernazza on the Italian coastline. Of the 1,200 acres encompassing Las Catalinas, only 200 acres are planned for development. The remaining 1000 acres of forest are home to exotic birds, howler monkeys, iguanas, and the odd wild cat.
Within the reserve, you’ll find thirty-five kilometers of hiking paths and varying degrees of mountain bike trails offering panoramic ocean views. If you’re into water recreation, you’ll love the crystalline waters offshore for snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, bodysurfing, and more. Las Catalinas is an outdoor athlete’s sanctuary with multiple yearly events that gets the whole town involved.
THE PROPERTY
Las Veraneras in Las Catalinas, greets its visitors with a grand façade, beautiful fountains, and Italian marble sculptures. As you enter the home, you are immediately with an impressive outdoor space, complete with custom tiles commissioned and imported from Portugal; a beautifully designed courtyard with coralina tile; a covered outdoor kitchen with a Wolf Grill, two under-counter Sub Zero refrigerators, a Sub Zero ice maker, and an under-counter Bosh dishwasher; and a dining area with seating for 16.
These magnificent outdoor spaces all center around the saltwater pool, elevated in a chic glass enclosure–complete with mood lighting–that overlooks the beach, just steps away.
Inside, the custom kitchen is a chef’s dream, and seamlessly marries the traditional with modern conveniences. The dining area features a 19th Century French Provincial Server, antique Bolivian Mirrors, Spanish Colonial Gilded Candelabras, and 18th Century Bronze Wall Sconces. The entertainment room parallel to the kitchen features a blend of colors and textures from modern art to antiquities. The sectional sofa sits below a framed 15th Century Nazra Poncho textile. The lacquered custom wood cabinet houses a 64-inch Ultra-thin TV on hydraulics. 17th century Persian oil vessels adorn each side of the sofa. And there is a separate sitting area with a 17th century English secretary desk.
As you embark down the enchanting staircase to the study, you are transported to a magical place. With its with travertine floors and wooden inlays, you can sit at the Cuban mahogany writing desk, placed just in front of an 17th century Flemish tapestry, as you gaze upon the 18th Century Chinese Urns.
Las Veraneras offers six bedrooms, each with its own distinctive character, stunning Pre-Columbian and South American artwork, and breathtaking views of the ocean. Three of the bedroom suites offer indoor/outdoor showers.
Las Veraneras was built for those who enjoy luxury and history, and the principle bedroom suite is a masterpiece in both. Boasting a barreled, herringbone brick ceiling, this impressive space features antique paintings, 17th century wooden carvings, framed Pre-Columbian textiles, a separated office/lounge area, and glass doors that open to a covered balcony and the waves crashing on the beach.
